President Trump just secured a much larger American military footprint in the Arctic without surrendering Greenland’s sovereignty or writing Denmark a purchase check.

That is the real significance of the security agreement he signed Tuesday with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

The deal gives the United States room to modernize and expand its existing space base, establish defense areas at two additional Greenland locations and add more sites if all three governments agree.

The signatures carry immediate military consequences far beyond the ceremony.

The Danish government says the agreement permits the modernization and expansion of Pituffik Space Base and identifies Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig as new defense areas. More areas can be created later through mutual agreement.

Pituffik is already America’s northernmost military installation. Its position gives the United States early-warning, missile-defense and space-surveillance reach over a part of the world that has become far more important as Russia and China push north.

Narsarsuaq sits in southern Greenland, while Mestersvig is on the eastern coast. Adding access at both locations gives American planners more than one lonely point on an enormous island and creates alternate places for aircraft, surveillance, logistics and emergency operations across Greenland’s vast territory.
